From Scratch to Python: A 15-Year-Old from Ofakim Builds His First App

: Yael Shapira

When Daniel signed up for BU's introduction to programming course in Ofakim, he was mostly curious. He had never written code and was not sure he would be good at it.

Learning the Basics

The course started with simple exercises in Scratch and moved on to Python after two months. Daniel was quick to grasp the logic and began staying after class to practice.

A Real Problem to Solve

Students were asked to build a final project that solves a problem in their daily lives. Daniel noticed that many of his classmates missed homework deadlines and exam dates. He decided to build a simple app to help.

How the App Works

Students enter their classes and exam dates

The app sends a reminder the day before each deadline

Teachers can share updates with the entire class

Presenting the Project

Daniel presented his app at the course's closing event in front of parents, teachers and a volunteer mentor from the tech industry. Thirty students in his grade are already using it.

"I used to think programming was only for geniuses. Now I know it's about solving problems one step at a time." – Daniel, 15

The Next Step

Daniel has joined the advanced programming track and hopes to study computer science in the future.
