Girls Who Code in Tamra: A First Cohort Graduates

Noa Ben-David

This spring, 18 girls from Tamra completed the first BU programming course in their city, designed especially for girls in ninth and tenth grade.

Why a Course for Girls

Women are still underrepresented in the tech industry, especially in Arab society. The course was created together with local schools to give girls a supportive space to learn, ask questions and build confidence.

What They Learned

Programming fundamentals in Python

Building simple websites with HTML and CSS

Working in teams on a final project

Presenting their work in Arabic and Hebrew

Meeting Role Models

Once a month, a woman working in the tech industry visited the group and shared her career path. For many participants, it was the first time they had met a woman software developer.

"I saw that someone from a place like mine can work in high tech. That changed everything for me." – Rana, 15

Results

Eleven of the 18 graduates have chosen computer science or a related major for high school. A second cohort will open next year with 25 places.
